Almost Perfect

Great app! I would love to be able to cross compare ANY 2 gels, not just what is comparable to the first selected gel. Also once you add a gel to a project, you should be able to click on those gels and see the waveform and transmission %. Not just attached notes. Fix those two things and you’ve got a 5 star app!

Fantastic App

Great tool if you take the time to set your screens brightness and color temperature this app renders color really well. Also has nice features to make your life easier.

Essential Cinematography iPhone app

Thank you for the latest Gel Swatch iPhone app update. The ability to use my iPhones camera or a calibrated photo to preview thousands of gel colors plus compare gels side by side over the image? This update is a game changer for my location scouts, tech meetings and those quick “What gel looks good here?” moments. I can’t wait to use it out in the field and on-set. It’s top of the stack now in my iPhones Cinematography Apps folder. One suggestion on improving the app. If the apps photo preview feature gave us the ability to selectively erase or paint on an area of the color gel overlay (for still photos only, not the live camera) this would really help in coming up with complex color combos. The ability to show Production Designers, Set Painters and Props people where a gel color wash will play on a live set would be incredible for an iPhone app. Tiffen used to have 2 iPhone apps that allowed masking to a certain degree with their camera filters overlaid on top of still photos. They sold it off I believe and it’s now called “DFT” aka Digital Film Tools in the iPhone App Store. It still functions the same and I use it all the time. I don’t know how complex app coding is but just a thought on taking the app to the next level. Have a great New Year! Kurt Kurt Rauf Director/Cinematographer

Thanks for the update!

Well, that took 5 years but I'm very grateful for the additions and improvements. Thanks!

Great App!

I use this App for almost every one of my productions, it's a very useful and powerful tool to have in your kit.

Incredible

Despite the belated nature of the review (I've had the app for over three years now), this is one of the best app purchases I've ever made as a professional film lighting technician. As both a means of making color suggestions to cinematographers, as well as finding alternatives to colors I've used in the past, it's invaluable. On top of that, I've used it countless times to identify an unmarked cut of gel pulled from the truck (as long as there's a catalog number on it somewhere, this app can pinpoint it). Couldn't ask for more. Thanks so much, Wybron!

Very useful

... but too bad they don't have Rosco swatches in "classic gel book" order rather than numerical order. Would be great to scroll through chromatically.

Idea for a later update

I had an interesting idea posed to me while showing off this app. With oldschool gel swatches, you can easily see what your set looks like with that color on it by just looking through the gel under the stage light. What I'd like to see is a way to add a filter to the camera screen so you can see how the color looks on the set. I know the transmission won't be perfect, but it'd at least give the designer an idea of what to expect.

I like it.

Hey ToasterDog (yes, you know who this is!) I find this handy in many ways, but, yes, for theater one should always refer to a swatch book. However when you do jobs like I do, it can be a really useful tool. It's fast, it's accurate (but not to tungsten quality) and you don't need to run to the bus/hotel to get a swatch book. With hundreds of gels out there and limited time, this app can be a lifesaver. If you have 3 weeks to sit in a theater... carry swatch books.

EXCELLENT!!

As a lighting professional, I am thrilled for this and the CXI application, truly a great utility to have in the field and on the go! Looking forward to more utilities such as this for the industry.

Ok, but used to be better

I bought this app because my girlfriend had gotten it herself several months prior. When she got it an i believe when i first got it it had the ability to compare any 2 gels. but since then in one of the updates Wybron killed this functionality. now you can only compare what they deem "similar" or complementary. Frequently I need to see how 2 gels will react when mixed together, or more often i don't always have a gel that is "similar" (as they define it) so i need to compare a gel i do have with the target gel to see just how far i am. I am quite disappointed that this functionality was removed. What the app does still do it does well but i can't in good conscience recommend this to LD friends of mine as strongly as i once could. I don't see the benefit of removing functionality to replace it with a button that for me is essentially just an ad for another app i don't need or want.

Love the App!

This thing is amazing- no more shuffling around for a swatchbook in my bag . . . And now that it has apollo it's perfect!

Its not just a gel book

I did not buy this app for a long time. It was intermission for a tech and I was out of R98 and needed the Gam or Lee equivalent. I bought the app. I have mixed feelings. It is very useful I found myself using it during tech often. It’s not just a gel book as others have claimed. It not only shows you similar gels but it shows the compliment and you can compare the wavelenghts of the gel and compliment.. The color wavelength data is a must, Rosco doesn’t include it in color on their swatches. I also like the cmy percentages, anyone dealing in color mixing or the EOS will love this feature. The problems I had with eairler versions are fixed or will be fixed in v1.4. Gels are easy to find and I find myself exploring new colors across manfacturers. It is now worth ten dollars.

Gets the Job Done

A wonderfully handy little ap. I use it almost every time I get a new designer in my space. The color matching isn't always as close as I would like, but it certainly gets the job done. I do really miss Apollo. I would love love love to be able to compare Apollo colors and find matches. Otherwise, I wonderful ap.

nice App for Lighting!!

The only thing i would like to see added is an option to save a gel as a favorite and store it within the app. so you can easily dial up your favorite colors. Other than that possibly more colors added down the line. nice job! nocely done!

Gel Swatch app.

Love this app. The color rendition is off because of the light source but it is off for everything so I can sitll get a good idea of what I will see. Also, please add Appollo to the list. Very useful.

Love it!

This totally saved my life today. I downloaded it in a minute and was able to find what I needed without spending minutes I didn't have figuring out how to use it. Love the layout and ease of use. Every ME and House Electrician should buy it (or else you spend hours wasting time holding unruly swatchbooks up to an overhead light). Thanks :-)

Useful App. But needs Apollo!

I use this app alot when I get lists of gel numbers, and need to know what color it is. I really wish that Apollo is included in the catalog.

Great

Just what I need while touring. Simple, effective, and accurate. Thanks!

ability to scroll on each swatch

Very handy application. One thought...it would be nice when viewing the individual swatches to be able to scroll to the next or previous colors. For example, when viewing R14 I may want to scroll to R15 and then R16 but would like to see the spectrum transmission levels. Thanks!

Useful But...

Needs apollo and rosco cinegel. Also too expensive, if this one also had a color mixer built in then I would be happier with the price. If it wasn't for the fact that I needed to always have a gel list for all the theaters I worked at on hand then I wouldn't have wasted my money.

Invaluable!!!

I used the heck out of this app this past week. A touring company sent me their rider with 3 different brands of gel on their lighting sheets. I was able to quickly cross-reference each color and get the colors close enough to keep them happy. I had most of what they wanted but not quite the same brand. What they wanted in Rosco I had in Lee and what they wanted in Lee I had in Gam or Rosco. I don't have the budget (rather, a budget at all) to accomodate every touring group that comes here. This helped me do just that with what I had in my inventory. Thanks, guys, and I'll stop by your booth at USITT and thank you personally.

very useful app

I have been surprised with how many times I actually have used this app. I find that the similar gels feature is the most useful, and having the CMY and RGB values of each color is great when attempting to match a color mixing source to a specific gel color. However, I agree with the other reviews about the order of Rosco gels being screwed up, and needing to include Apollo gels. Please update this app, I paid $10 for it, I think I deserve an update.

Great idea with a few flaws

Lost 1 star for the way rosco gel is ordered (make it the same as the swatchbook) and another star for the lack of Apollo. Fix those and it's a 5-star app.

CaptainFracker is on to something here...

There are no expected extremes in todays technology, nor should one expect an iphone app. to replace real world. This app. was a good idea and offers a lot of people (including myself) a relative quick reference for industry colors on-the-fly. Thank you Wybron. But Fracker is right. Until I read ALL of the reviews, i didn't realize who I now know he definitely does not work for... Well then, "spank me pink".

Useful, more headway to be made

It's useful, but add Apollo! The ability to cross compare any two gels, not just similar and complementary is something I'd like to see. I've already begun using it in show, it's been really handy. Hard to compare gel color in cue to cue darkness, the spectrograph is invaluable!

Good Overall

Like the program - needs improvement. I am curious why when asking for similar colors in cto it doesn't compare similarly titled colors between Lee, Rosco and Gam.

A few suggestions

Small wish list item: the ability to compare any two colors, not just the suggested similar colors and compliments. Big wish list item: suggested gel colors based on color picker type criteria. For example: more saturated, less green, etc.

Best $10 i've spent on here so far

Great App....does exactly what they say it does. I'm a lighting designer and i have to say its nice not having to carry around all my gel books, when really all I need is the waveform and the transmission %. Saying that be careful about picking colors based on how they look on the screen...but then again if you need that warning thus app is not for you. Hope they bring Apollo to us in the future, but the app is worth the money with just Rosco, GAM, and Lee.

SO close to perfect

I find this app quite useful. The ability to see colors both similar and complementary to the selected color is great, and the full set of info on each color is appreciated. I am somewhat irritated by the order in which the Rosco colors appear (R111 appears after R11, R3405 appears after R34, none of the 300 series appears after their associated primary colors). Were it not for that ordering issue, I would have given a full 5 stars. I have 2 suggestions, both of which I would gladly pay considerably more for. First, add the ability to see a comparison of each color with a 3200 source and a 5600 source. Second, add the Vari*Lite colors to the selection.

Swatch Books are free

Why would I buy an iphone app that doesn't have all of the gels out there when I can go to the nearest shp and get all the swatch books for free and this is only an approximation of what the gel woudl ok like againt white paper, not in life.

Mr. Anderson

Ok, I thought this app was awsome. It has plenty of gels and there are more to come I hear. I would like to see more apps like this. For example, one where you calculate the throw distance of a light and the beam diameter. I think that would be hot! Please consider this, it would be AWSOME if you guys could come out with lighting apps for the theater that had to do with more than just gels. But I liked this one.

Very useful!

I think this is a very useful application, and I've already used it a few times. The ability to look at similar and contrasting colors at a click are just great. To all the people complaining that it doesn't have historical asian gel or multiple methods of color picking, realize that this is the first appearance of this applciation. I'm sure future upates will include even more useful methods of selection.

Not worth $10

While this app is useful, I was dissapointed by the limited selection of gel companies (no Apollo). I was also disappointed by the lack of convienent browsing features such as a color wheel or grid.

Awesome

This is great. Can't wait for updates so it has Apollo(which is the same as Rosco, I Know). I run a lighting rental house and this will be very usefull for suggesting colors and similiar colors to my customers. Price is a little high, for such a simple app, but that's our industry.

Very well done

This app is very well written and very versitile. Kudos to Wybron for really thinking this one out and putting many features into it.

I squeealed with delight

This is the coolist thing I have seen for the iPhone thus far I bought it and downloaded it imeadiatly of course it only makes sense if you do theatre lighting but if you do it bodes well for the future of the iPhone in this field. Now if only apple would allow us to turn off the cell with out putting the phone in to airplane mode so that the wifi could still be used for DMX over wifi and other show control with out the sound guy getting all bent out of shape we might be on to something really cool. Oh yeah and the app performed as expected and should come in real handy.
