Gel Swatch Library App Reviews

Invaluable!!!

I used the heck out of this app this past week. A touring company sent me their rider with 3 different brands of gel on their lighting sheets. I was able to quickly cross-reference each color and get the colors close enough to keep them happy. I had most of what they wanted but not quite the same brand. What they wanted in Rosco I had in Lee and what they wanted in Lee I had in Gam or Rosco. I dont have the budget (rather, a budget at all) to accomodate every touring group that comes here. This helped me do just that with what I had in my inventory. Thanks, guys, and Ill stop by your booth at USITT and thank you personally.

Useful But...

Needs apollo and rosco cinegel. Also too expensive, if this one also had a color mixer built in then I would be happier with the price. If it wasnt for the fact that I needed to always have a gel list for all the theaters I worked at on hand then I wouldnt have wasted my money.

ability to scroll on each swatch

Very handy application. One thought...it would be nice when viewing the individual swatches to be able to scroll to the next or previous colors. For example, when viewing R14 I may want to scroll to R15 and then R16 but would like to see the spectrum transmission levels. Thanks!

Great

Just what I need while touring. Simple, effective, and accurate. Thanks!

Useful App. But needs Apollo!

I use this app alot when I get lists of gel numbers, and need to know what color it is. I really wish that Apollo is included in the catalog.

Love it!

This totally saved my life today. I downloaded it in a minute and was able to find what I needed without spending minutes I didnt have figuring out how to use it. Love the layout and ease of use. Every ME and House Electrician should buy it (or else you spend hours wasting time holding unruly swatchbooks up to an overhead light). Thanks :-)

Gel Swatch app.

Love this app. The color rendition is off because of the light source but it is off for everything so I can sitll get a good idea of what I will see. Also, please add Appollo to the list. Very useful.

Gets the Job Done

A wonderfully handy little ap. I use it almost every time I get a new designer in my space. The color matching isnt always as close as I would like, but it certainly gets the job done. I do really miss Apollo. I would love love love to be able to compare Apollo colors and find matches. Otherwise, I wonderful ap.

nice App for Lighting!!

The only thing i would like to see added is an option to save a gel as a favorite and store it within the app. so you can easily dial up your favorite colors. Other than that possibly more colors added down the line. nice job! nocely done!

Its not just a gel book

I did not buy this app for a long time. It was intermission for a tech and I was out of R98 and needed the Gam or Lee equivalent. I bought the app. I have mixed feelings. It is very useful I found myself using it during tech often. It’s not just a gel book as others have claimed. It not only shows you similar gels but it shows the compliment and you can compare the wavelenghts of the gel and compliment.. The color wavelength data is a must, Rosco doesn’t include it in color on their swatches. I also like the cmy percentages, anyone dealing in color mixing or the EOS will love this feature. The problems I had with eairler versions are fixed or will be fixed in v1.4. Gels are easy to find and I find myself exploring new colors across manfacturers. It is now worth ten dollars.

Love the App!

This thing is amazing- no more shuffling around for a swatchbook in my bag . . . And now that it has apollo its perfect!

Ok, but used to be better

I bought this app because my girlfriend had gotten it herself several months prior. When she got it an i believe when i first got it it had the ability to compare any 2 gels. but since then in one of the updates Wybron killed this functionality. now you can only compare what they deem "similar" or complementary. Frequently I need to see how 2 gels will react when mixed together, or more often i dont always have a gel that is "similar" (as they define it) so i need to compare a gel i do have with the target gel to see just how far i am. I am quite disappointed that this functionality was removed. What the app does still do it does well but i cant in good conscience recommend this to LD friends of mine as strongly as i once could. I dont see the benefit of removing functionality to replace it with a button that for me is essentially just an ad for another app i dont need or want.

EXCELLENT!!

As a lighting professional, I am thrilled for this and the CXI application, truly a great utility to have in the field and on the go! Looking forward to more utilities such as this for the industry.

I like it.

Hey ToasterDog (yes, you know who this is!) I find this handy in many ways, but, yes, for theater one should always refer to a swatch book. However when you do jobs like I do, it can be a really useful tool. Its fast, its accurate (but not to tungsten quality) and you dont need to run to the bus/hotel to get a swatch book. With hundreds of gels out there and limited time, this app can be a lifesaver. If you have 3 weeks to sit in a theater... carry swatch books.

Idea for a later update

I had an interesting idea posed to me while showing off this app. With oldschool gel swatches, you can easily see what your set looks like with that color on it by just looking through the gel under the stage light. What Id like to see is a way to add a filter to the camera screen so you can see how the color looks on the set. I know the transmission wont be perfect, but itd at least give the designer an idea of what to expect.

Very useful

... but too bad they dont have Rosco swatches in "classic gel book" order rather than numerical order. Would be great to scroll through chromatically.

Incredible

Despite the belated nature of the review (Ive had the app for over three years now), this is one of the best app purchases Ive ever made as a professional film lighting technician. As both a means of making color suggestions to cinematographers, as well as finding alternatives to colors Ive used in the past, its invaluable. On top of that, Ive used it countless times to identify an unmarked cut of gel pulled from the truck (as long as theres a catalog number on it somewhere, this app can pinpoint it). Couldnt ask for more. Thanks so much, Wybron!
